Our commitment

Puritas Limited recognises that responsible environmental management is an important part of operating a resilient and sustainable business.

As a provider of software solutions and consultancy services, our direct environmental footprint is different from that of a manufacturing or industrial organisation. Nevertheless, our activities use energy and resources through our offices, IT equipment, cloud infrastructure, business travel, purchasing decisions and waste.

We are committed to understanding these impacts, reducing them where reasonably practicable and continually improving our environmental performance.

Purpose and scope

This policy explains how Puritas considers and manages the environmental effects of its operations.

It applies to:

  • all Puritas employees, directors and contractors;
  • our offices and remote-working activities;
  • the development, implementation, hosting and support of our software;
  • business travel, purchasing and supplier relationships; and
  • the equipment, materials and services used in delivering our work.

Environmental considerations will be proportionate to the nature, scale and impact of each activity.

Our environmental principles

Compliance and responsible governance

We will comply with applicable environmental legislation, regulations and other obligations in the jurisdictions where we operate.

Environmental risks and opportunities will be considered as part of relevant business planning, operational decisions and supplier selection. Where an environmental incident or concern arises, it will be reported, investigated and addressed appropriately.

The Puritas Board has overall accountability for this policy. Managers are responsible for applying it within their areas, and everyone working for Puritas is expected to support its objectives.

Energy and carbon emissions

We will seek to reduce the energy and associated carbon emissions arising from our offices, technology and business activities.

Our approach includes:

  • monitoring material sources of energy use and emissions where reliable information is available;
  • using energy-efficient lighting, equipment and workplace settings;
  • switching off or placing equipment into low-power modes when it is not required;
  • avoiding unnecessary operation of development, testing and other computing environments;
  • considering energy and environmental performance when selecting technology and service providers; and
  • reviewing opportunities to use electricity from lower-carbon or renewable sources where this is practical and commercially reasonable.

We will establish appropriate performance measures as our environmental data develops. These may include office energy consumption, business travel, purchased IT equipment and the environmental performance information provided by key suppliers.

Responsible digital operations

Digital services have an environmental impact through the electricity and infrastructure needed to process, store and transmit data.

Puritas will therefore consider efficiency throughout the technology lifecycle. We will seek to:

  • design and maintain software that uses computing resources efficiently;
  • manage cloud capacity, development environments and data storage responsibly;
  • remove obsolete data and redundant resources where this can be done securely and in accordance with legal, regulatory and contractual requirements;
  • balance resilience, security and availability requirements with responsible resource use; and
  • engage with hosting and cloud providers that can demonstrate credible environmental management and transparent reporting.

Environmental efficiency will never be pursued at the expense of information security, data integrity, regulatory compliance or service resilience. Our objective is to achieve an appropriate and evidence-based balance.

Travel and commuting

We will reduce avoidable travel and encourage lower-impact alternatives where they are suitable.

This includes:

  • using video conferencing and remote collaboration where an in-person meeting is not necessary;
  • planning essential journeys efficiently;
  • combining meetings where practical;
  • preferring public transport and lower-emission travel options where reasonable; and
  • supporting flexible and remote working arrangements where these meet operational, security and client requirements.

The purpose and value of business travel will be considered alongside its financial and environmental cost.

Materials, waste and electronic equipment

Puritas will follow the waste hierarchy by seeking first to prevent waste, then to reuse, repair or recycle materials before considering disposal.

We will:

  • use digital documents and electronic workflows wherever appropriate;
  • limit printing and use double-sided printing as the default where paper is required;
  • purchase recycled or responsibly sourced paper and office materials where practical;
  • avoid unnecessary single-use products and excessive packaging;
  • provide suitable recycling arrangements within our workplaces;
  • maintain IT equipment to extend its useful life; and
  • reuse, donate or recycle obsolete equipment through appropriate and authorised channels.

Data-bearing devices will be securely erased or destroyed in accordance with our information-security requirements before they are reused or recycled. Electronic waste will be handled by reputable providers and in accordance with applicable requirements.

Purchasing and suppliers

The products and services we purchase can represent a significant part of our wider environmental impact.

Where proportionate to the value and nature of a contract, we will consider:

  • product durability, repairability and energy efficiency;
  • packaging and end-of-life arrangements;
  • suppliers’ environmental policies, objectives and performance;
  • credible environmental certifications or evidence;
  • the environmental performance of cloud, hosting and data-centre providers; and
  • opportunities to use local or lower-impact suppliers without compromising quality, security or value.

Environmental considerations will form part of our overall assessment alongside service quality, information security, compliance, resilience, accessibility and commercial suitability.

Employee awareness and participation

Effective environmental management depends on informed and engaged people.

We will communicate this policy to employees and provide appropriate guidance on matters such as energy use, travel, waste, procurement and equipment management.

Employees are encouraged to identify practical improvements and raise environmental concerns. Suggestions will be assessed on their likely impact, feasibility, cost and compatibility with client, security and regulatory requirements.

Continual improvement and transparency

Puritas will apply a continual-improvement approach to environmental management.

We will:

  • identify our material environmental impacts;
  • establish practical objectives and actions;
  • monitor progress using information that is reliable and proportionate;
  • review significant changes to our operations, technology and supplier arrangements;
  • address identified weaknesses or non-compliance; and
  • communicate material progress accurately and without overstating our performance.

Any environmental claims made by Puritas will be based on reasonable evidence. We will avoid vague or misleading statements and will clearly distinguish between completed actions, current performance and future ambitions.

Review of this policy

This policy will be reviewed at least annually and whenever there is a significant change to our business, environmental impacts or applicable obligations.

The latest approved version will be made available on the Puritas website.
